Get the cheapest tickets now by booking your advance travel today!

With ever increasing rail fares, booking your holiday travel back to see family can get pretty pricey. To save yourself spending a fortune (or even worse- getting a coach), Martin Lewis’s financial advice site MoneySavingExpert have shared their best tips for cheap holiday train travel in their latest newsletter.

The newsletter shared that about twelve weeks before travel is the sweet spot for getting the cheapest deals on train tickets, which means now is the prime time to book for discounted Christmas fares.

Although some of the major train companies are yet to release their tickets for the holiday season, tickets are already available from Grand Central Rail, LNER, TransPennine Express, and some from Southeastern, though only up to the 21st of December.

MoneySavingExpert has offered some other hot tips for saving money with your train travel. For instance, sometimes it’s cheaper to book your travel in two separate parts, even if you never change trains. For instance, if your London to Durham train stops off in York, you could save money by booking one ticket London to York and another York to Durham. This is totally above board, as long as the train stops in the station your ticket leaves from.

Their newsletter also suggests it’s sometimes cheaper to buy two singles than a return. In one instance the MoneySavingExpert team was able to save a whopping £283 with this strategy on travel between London and Manchester- a return ticket was £350, while a single there was only £41 and the return just £26.
