A vintage motor that was left parked in the same spot in Italy for nearly half a century has turned into a national treasure.

Italian man Angelo Fregolent parked his classic Lancia Fulvia 1962 outside his newsagents in the town of Conegliano back in 1974.

Speaking to Il Gazzettino, the 94-year-old said: "I ran the newsstand under the house for 40 years together with my wife Bertilla, 10 years younger than me.

"When I opened the business, I was happy to have the Lancia Fulvia parked in front of it because I had the newspapers unloaded in the trunk and then I took them inside."

After retiring, the couple left the car parked in its usual spot and it become part of the town's furniture with tourists regularly taking selfies by the abandoned classic wheels.

Local officials have since moved the car recently and have taken it to the Auto e Moto d'Epoca Motorshow in Padua to sit alongside other classic vehicles.

According to Italiaonline, Giovanni Berton - president of the Serenissima historical car club in Conegliano - said: "The history of the Fulvia has been around the world and we could not remain indifferent.

"Thus was born the idea of taking it to the car showroom, where many will be able to admire it."

After being carefully restored, the car is set to be parked outside a local school next to Angelo and Bertilla's house where tourists can admire its four wheels.

Local Luca Zaia praised: "The car has been parked there since I was going to school."

Imagine how many parking tickets it would have racked up in the UK...
