If there was ever a sign to check your spam folder regularly, this would be it.

We’ve all been guilty of not checking that extra folder in our emails, but for one woman in Michigan, it was the difference between being a lottery winner, and missing out on $3 million.

Laura Spears, from Oakland County, Michigan had no idea she’d won the huge sum in the Mega Millions until she went looking for a different email entirely, and ended up getting the shock of her life.

In a release from the Michigan Lottery, Laura said: “I saw an ad on Facebook that the Mega Millions jackpot was getting pretty high, so I got on my account and bought a ticket.

“A few days later, I was looking for a missing email from someone, so I checked the spam folder in my email account.

“That’s when I saw an email from the Lottery saying I had won a prize. I couldn’t believe what I was reading, so I logged in to my Lottery account to confirm the message in the email. It’s all still so shocking to me that I really won $3 million!”

Laura then joked the Michigan Lottery is definitely now on her ‘safe senders list’, and revealed she plans to share her big win with her family and retire earlier than planned.

It turns out Laura originally won $1 million, but a ‘Megaplier’ on the prize saw that triple to $3 million.

If anyone in Michigan was hoping to catch a bit of that luck, the Michigan Lottery site is encouraging locals to buy a ticket as the jackpot is currently $376 million, with the last jackpot win in October 2021.

Lesson learned - make sure all Lottery emails get sent straight to the inbox, or you could be missing out on an eye-watering amount of money.
