If you’ve ever heard whispers of a secret McDonald’s menu, then you are going to be interested in what an employee of the restaurant chain has revealed on TikTok.

A New York-based TikTok user called Ashton, who goes by the handle @motheraangel, has shared some behind-the-scenes information about the restaurant, and the video has gone viral, with six-and-a-half million views and over 1.5 million likes so far.

The clip reveals secrets such as why the milkshake machine is always apparently “broken”, and whether or not there is actually a secret menu.

Well, according to Ashton, there isn’t really a secret menu at all, but you can pretty much just come up with your own. “The secret menu doesn’t exist,” she says. “The only ‘secret’ is that you can customise any item on the menu, and we’ll do it.”

So there you go, if you want to get creative, you can ask staff at your McDonald’s to customise their regular offerings and, if Ashton is correct, they might just do it for you (although she does say in the comments section that some of the tips and secrets she shares will vary from restaurant to restaurant, and she is based in the US, so things might be different in the UK).

McDonald’s restaurants in the US recently started offering customer-inspired hacks as part of their menu, you can find out how to order them in the UK here.

Another secret that Ashton shared in her TikTok video relates to the ice cream machines used to make the milkshakes, and why they might seem to be broken on a regular basis. “99.9 percent of the time, the ice cream machine is not broken," she says.

“There are three reasons why we tell you it's broken. One: It's being cleaned. It's cleaned on the clock. Two: It’s in 'heat mode', so for whatever reason the ice cream is hot in there. Three: If we're extremely busy, and we're understaffed, and we're backed up with cars, a lot of the time, we'll just not serve ice cream until the rush is over.”
