Who knew there was a right and wrong way to eat bread!

Bread and butter is a staple foodstuff, but according to one food etiquette expert there are manners to be considered.

Many people have stood in the kitchen with a slice while waiting for dinner to cook, or dived into the basket of warm rolls as they're brought out to the table at a restaurant.

Slathering the slice with butter is apparently impolite.

Expert Dr Clinton Lee admits the method is “practical” but for correct table manners and politeness, it is “incorrect”.

"Many people will take the entire piece of bread and butter it on their plate,” he explained.

He says the correct way is to place the butter onto your plate, and break the bread up first.

“This is where the saying comes from, ‘breaking bread’,” he said.

“You break the bread into small, mouth-sized pieces, butter it and there you go. Perfect.”

His TikTok video has been watched more than 1.5 million times.

Other rules include only eating the bread when your course arrives, not before.

You should also keep the bread to the left of the main dinner plate.

Commenters were shocked to discover they had been doing it wrong.

They jokingly replied called themselves “monsters” and “barbaric”.

Others disagreed with the advice: “This doesn’t even make sense; it looks like it made more mess,”

Another added: “In the grand scheme of things, specifically the gift of life, I find this to be complete nonsense. I really can’t believe people do this,” another wrote.

“If someone is going to shame me for how I butter my bread I don’t need them in my life," insisted one.

Many people were grateful for the knowledge.

“He’s showing what other people do, and it’s great information,” one said.

“Wow, that’s classy,” said another, adding they had “always wondered which way was the right way”.

Now you know!
