TikTok has taught us all something new again, this time about a feature on some jackets.

If you've never wondered what the shoulder straps on your jacket are for, prepare to have your mind blown.

Sidney (@sidneyraz) shared the news on TikTok, as a part of his series of "things I wish I knew before I was in my 30s."

He explains in the video that "they were originally designed for backpacks, ammunition bags or bayonets from slipping off your shoulder."

Not overly handy for 2022, but still good to know!

Fashion brand LeatherCult says "the origins of shoulder straps can be traced back to the early to mid-1800s, during which they were used in military uniforms."

"The feature allowed soldiers to secure bags and any other gear to their shoulders, keeping them from slipping off."

Leather jackets also used this trick for motorcycle riders to keep things secure.

They are used to hold gloves, goggles, or other accessories.

If you didn't know this, you're definitely not alone.

"I am almost 31... I did not know this..." replied one.

"I ALWAYS WONDERED WHY WE HAD THOSE?!!!" yelled another.

"Omg that's genius" praised another.

Many commenters were kicking themselves for struggling with their bags all this time.

"I’ve been letting my tote fall off my shoulders all this time for what?!" one exclaimed.

Another added: "Omg all the purses I've dropped lmao."

It turns out a few people did know though.

"I did it without knowing it was the right way to use it" said one.

"That's what I been using them for and everyone thought I was crazy!" added someone else.
