Abba’s Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson have ruled out a reunion at the Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden next year.

After Loreen took home the Eurovision trophy for Sweden in Liverpool this year, there were rumours the band would reunite for the 50th anniversary of winning the competition with their song Waterloo.

However, Bjorn and Benny put those rumours to bed when speaking to BBC Newsnight and even dismissed the idea they might host the event.

When asked if they would possibly reunite with Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad to perform just for one night, Andersson replied: “I don’t want to, and if I don’t want to, the others won’t. It’s the same for all four of us – someone says, ‘no’ – it’s a no.”

However, Ulvaeus added: “We can celebrate 50 years of Abba without us being on stage.”

This comes as the first-anniversary approaches of Abba’s Voyage virtual concert experience in London, which sees CGI versions of Abba perform some of their biggest hits.

Based on the movements and performances of the band, the avatars are a reincarnation of Abba in the 70s as they perform with a live band.

The opening of the Voyage experience coincided with an album of the same name, released in 2021 but it seems that will be the last record we can expect from the band.

When asked if there is anything else in the works, Ulvaeus told NME last month: “No, Voyage the album was the last you’ll ever hear from us.”

However, it seems they are still open to experimenting with emerging technologies like AI and virtual reality.

He added: “There will be new exciting formats in the future that we know very little about right now. AI, the metaverse, there are lots of interesting and exciting things happening creatively that ABBA.”
