WHAM! Has seen a large spike in music video views following the release of hit Netflix documentary, WHAM!

Vevo has reported that the Wham! channel reached an all-time record number of views on the back of the documentary. The music video network saw average daily views increase by 69 per cent just days after the documentary launched in June.

Viewers have been watching music videos of the band’s legendary hits including Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go and Club Tropicana.

Elliot Jaillet, Senior Manager at Vevo, credited the documentary with providing a “cultural moment” for the band, prompting the uplift in music video views.

“The new WHAM! documentary has inspired us to step back in time and enjoy many of the band’s hits. People watching and talking about this documentary, they jump right to Vevo to check out the soundtrack and videos that made this band who they were.”

Jaillet notes that an uplift of this scale is in line with long-standing trends at Vevo following similar cultural moments.

“Nostalgia is a powerful emotion, and a big reason that our Vevo ‘80s chancel is one of our most-watched too.”

The Netflix documentary has also prompted success for the band’s newly released album of their greatest hits, Wham! The Singles: Echoes From The Edge of Heaven, which recently reached number two in the UK album chart.Commenting on the album, Wham! backing singers, Pepsi and Shirley hailed its success as “absolutely joyous”. The pair also seem to be indulging in the widespread nostalgia, comparing the immense reception of the album to “warm hugs”.
