Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band honoured the late Shane MacGowan by covering a classic Pogues song during a gig in Ireland.

On Sunday night (12th May), The Boss and his band played in Kilkenny, and opened their set with their take on A Rainy Night In Soho, which was released in 1986 and originally included on the Poguetry in Motion EP.

The Pogues frontman MacGowan died from pneumonia at the age of 65 last November. He had suffered numerous health issues over the years, and was diagnosed with encephalitis in December 2022. Springsteen visited the Fairytale of New York singer in hospital in May 2023.

Fans at the gig in Nowlan Park at the weekend took to social media to share clips and react to The Boss’ cover of A Rainy Night In Soho.

One person wrote: “Yeah okay, this made my eyes leak a little bit. Such a gracious tribute to the man, Shane McG.”

Another added: “It was magical.”

Although A Rainy Night In Soho opened the headline set, fans who turned up early were treated to some bonus Bruce, as the singer-songwriter delivered an unexpected acoustic rendition of his song This Hard Land, hours before the actual show got started.

When he returned for the main set, Bruce and his group of amazing musicians played a typically epic set, which spanned his career. Classics included Dancing in the Dark, Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out, Thunder Road, Hungry Heart, Glory Days and more.

The Boss’ tour continues in Cork on 16th May, then heads to Dublin on 19th May and Sunderland on 22nd May. After a jaunt around mainland Europe, the European leg of his tour wraps up in London on 25th July.

In related news, a Succession star has reportedly thrown their hat in the ring to star as the musician's manager in a forthcoming biopic.
