Daughter of the late Soundgarden singer, Toni Cornell, brought a tear to our eyes when she performed her father’s Grammy-nominated cover of Nothing Compares 2 U.

Toni appeared on The Late Show with Jimmy Fallon last week (16 December) to sing the cover accompanied by Pete Thorn, her father’s long-time guitarist and friend.

The song was originally written by Prince and made famous by Sinead O’Connor when it appeared on her second album, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got (1990).

Chris Cornell’s version of the song was nominated for Best Rock Performance at the Grammy’s after it appeared on his No One Sings Like You Anymore Vol. 1 album, which has also received a nomination for Best Rock Album.

No One Sings Like You Anymore was released in December 2020 and features some of Cornell’s final studio recordings, including covers of songs by Janis Joplin, Guns N’ Roses and John Lennon.

On Father’s Day in June 2018, Toni shared a recording of her covering the song alongside her father before he died a year prior.

At the time, she wrote: “Daddy, I love you and miss you so much. You were the best father anyone could ask for.

“Our relationship was so special, and you were always there for me. You gave me courage when I didn’t have any. You believed in me when I didn’t. I miss your love everyday.

“Recording this song with you was a special and amazing experience I wish I could repeat 100 times over, and I know you would too. Happy Father’s Day daddy, nothing compares to you.”
