We’re all used to Ed Sheeran performing with nothing more than his guitar and a loop pedal, but now he's stripped things back even further.

The musician ditched his trusty musical instrument to perform a brilliant version of his 2020 track Afterglow.

In a clip shared on YouTube, the best-selling artist appears with backing vocalists to deliver an a capella version of his hit single. The performance takes place in a church, using the atmospheric acoustics to dazzling effect.

This new version of the song has been released to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the release of the original single. Sharing the video on Twitter, the musician simply wrote: “One year since Afterglow, Merry Christmas xx”

Have a look and a listen here:

This new offering follows the multi-award-winner's Christmas collaboration with Elton John. Proceeds from the appropriately-titled single, Merry Christmas, will go to the Ed Sheeran Suffolk Music Foundation and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Ed and Elton have also teamed up with LadBaby to bring out a cheeky sausage roll-flavoured twist on the song called Sausage Rolls For Everyone. Ed tweeted: “I’m proud to be supporting and featuring on LadBaby’s very fun rework of Merry Christmas. All profits will be donated to The Trussell Trust which is a very wonderful and important charity, so make sure you stream it, buy it and play it on repeat."

Ahead of all this, Ed also dropped his highly-anticipated fourth full-length album, “=” (Equals) in October. He has been nominated in four categories at the BRIT awards in 2022.

The artist is up for the Album of the Year award, as well as the new gender-neutral Artist of the Year category. His huge single Bad Habits is up for Song of the Year, and has also received a nod in the Best Pop/R&B category.
