Sir Elton John thanked fans for ‘holding on to these tickets for 745 days’.

The music legend finally returned to touring, after a two-year delay.

He is back out on the road with his long-awaited Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.

It first started in September 2018, with the world tour planned as a goodbye to fans as he begins to wind down.

The pandemic had other ideas, causing the tour to be delayed, and Elton also suffered a hip injury.

He shared a video on Instagram, and wrote: "New Orleans, I’ve loved you since I first visited in 1971! You’ve got funk and you’ve got electricity and I couldn’t have asked for a better welcome back after so long off the road."

Some three years on, Elton is back onstage, with the opening night of the Farewell Yellow Brick Road taking place in New Orleans.

He kicked off the set with Bennie and the Jets, before performing a set packed full of classics.

‘We haven’t played a show since March 6, 2020,’ he says. ‘This is a new experience for us, I’ve never had this amount of time off in my life… at least since I was 17 years of age!’

Elton remarked on how many days it has been, before adding: ‘I can’t thank you enough for being so patient’.

Sir Elton performed Tiny Dancer, Rocket Man, I’m Still Standing and more.

There are 40 arena dates planned across North America, as well as dates in the UK and Europe.

The tour is a treat for Elton fans, encompassing his incredible 50-year career and features never-before-seen photos and videos.

He has quite the back catalogue to choose from, and fans are treated to his greatest hits.

Sir Elton said he wants to spend more time with husband David Furnish and their two sons, Zachary and Elijah.
