If you fancy driving around in some seriously impressive rock star memorabilia, pay attention, because the 1974 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow owned by iconic Queen frontman Freddie Mercury is going under the hammer next month. And proceeds of the sale will go to a Ukraine charity.
The car came into Freddie’s possession in 1979, and he owned it until his death in 1991. The legendary vocalist didn’t have a driving licence, so he used the car as his chauffeur-driven transportation.
The beautiful car has a 6,750cc V8 engine and is finished in Silver Chalice with a blue interior. It comes with a history file which includes Freddie’s name on several workshop invoices. Whilst much of the paperwork is recorded with the name of his close friend Mary Austin, a letter from Queen manager, Jim Beach, verifies that the singer owned the Rolls-Royce.
Proceeds from the auction are going to the Superhumans Center, which is a charity established to provide aid in Ukraine. The charity’s official website says: “Thousands of Ukrainians have suffered life-changing injuries, wounded at the battlefield and at the streets of their cities. We are launching a state-of-the-art war victim rehabilitation centre for adults and children in Ukraine, to give these people a superhero life they deserve.”
Car specialist Nick Wiles from RM Sotheby’s said: “This car is simply fantastic. It’s hard to find any music fan who doesn’t love Freddie Mercury, and he remains as big a name today as he ever was.”
The expert at the classic car auction house added: “This car represents a serious piece of history and the fact that the proceeds of the sale will benefit the amazing Superhumans of Ukraine charity, is wonderful. We are delighted that the owner of the car has entrusted it to us to deliver the best possible outcome for the charity.”
If you fancy bidding, then be sure to mark 5th November in your diary, as that is the date when it will go under the hammer.
