Following the success of the 2024 TCS London Marathon, Event Director Hugh Brasher shared some very exciting news about next year’s event.

The 2024 London Marathon took place yesterday (Sunday 21st April) with more than 53,000 runners cheered on by vast crowds on the streets of London.

While the participants are still nursing their aching muscles, thoughts already turn to next year’s TCS London Marathon, with the ballot now open at It closes this Friday, 26th April.

And Event Director Hugh Brasher joined the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with webuyanycar to make a big announcement about the 2025 event. He said: “We probably had, yesterday, about 90 people going for a Guinness World Record, whether it's the fastest vegetable, whether it's the fastest man carrying a fridge… we actually want to help everyone to be a Guinness World Record holder. So for the 2025 TCS London Marathon, we want to break the Guinness World Record as the largest marathon on the planet!”.

He added: “We actually nearly did it this year. We really nearly did it. So Paris currently has the record. And the record is 53,899.

“We were about 53,875! No, seriously, we were about 24, 25 people away from the record. We were so, so close."

A record 578,374 applicants signed up to the ballot this year. Speaking about the ballot for 2025, Hugh said: “We always let more people in. So we generally let about 65,000 people in to get the number of finishers. And we do an awful lot of predictions about how many people we're going to get. There’s a huge amount of work going on this… and we're very confident that we can get another 25 people in the event; we do talk to all the London authorities. But we really want to go over the 55,000.

“We're absolutely certain that the event can do that. So we're gonna give people more chance to getting in, right. So again, if you want to do it, it's going to be the 45th, the biggest, and as long as we beat the record, you will be able to have your Guinness World Record plaque up in your house… and it would then make the most number of people ever having a Guinness World Record plaque, which in itself is a Guinness World Record!”

He continued: “More people will be able to get in. We will basically probably go for something in the region of 70,000 people to get in to beat the record. So yeah, that's what we're here to announce today. It’s the first time that we’ve said that. We were so close this year.

“Sign up, you never know. We will tell you at the beginning of July, so you'll have plenty of time to prepare.”

On getting more people running, the London Marathon Event Director said: “Whether it's couch to 5k, a Park Run, just go on this incredible journey of making your body more alive and you more connected to your body.”

And regarding the London Marathon, he added: “It brings people together, it just brings the world together.”

The winner of the Women’s elite race in 2024 was Peres Jepchirchir, who set a new women’s only world-record time of 2:16:16, while the winner of the Men’s elite race was Alexander Mutiso Munyao, who went round in 2:04:01.

The TCS London Marathon 2025 takes place on Sunday 27th April. Enter next year’s ballot at Entries close on Friday 26th April.
