Series 4 came to an end with (spoiler alert) Scott deciding to attempt to sail The Atlantic, having previously ditched the idea, and Princess’ birth mother turning up at Nikki and Jason’s home. So, the question on everyone's mind now is: will there be a Series 5?

Appearing on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with webuyanycar on Virgin Radio ahead of series four arriving, Esther and Rafe, who play Nikki and Jason respectively, gave fans a tantalising glimpse into the future of the show.

The couple, both on and off-screen, shared their excitement and thoughts on the beloved series.

The narrative of the fourth series, set six years after series three, saw Nikki and Jason dealing with the challenges of parenting their teenage children, with Princess yearning to reconnect with her birth mother.

This plot twist at the end of the series had fans on the edge of their seats, eagerly awaiting the next chapter in their story.

Chris Evans, always the inquisitive host, got straight to the point with the question all fans are dying to know: "What do we think about season five? I don't know what happens in season four. So you never know whether season four allows for season five."

Esther Smith, always with a twinkle in her eye, responded: "I have to say. It's [the end of series 4] a bit of a cliffhanger. So I wonder. It would be lovely to do a series five."

Rafe Spall, who brings his signature charm to the role of Jason, added: "I hope so. It'd be good. I'd be happy to do this show. I love it for many reasons. I think it's good, funny."

Rafe told Chris: "I really like not having to do an accent. Because that's a real pain in the bum. And I'm doing that in Canada at the moment doing an American accent."

Esther, always the supportive partner, chimed in: "You're really good at it though."

Rafe, ever the jokester, replied: "Yeah, but it's when you whenever, whenever you have to do an accent as an actor that is 95 percent of what you thinking about.

"Let me tell you that and I also get to, you know, hang out on my favourite person all day, Imelda Staunton."

The couple, who met on the set of Trying and have since become an item in real life, with a chemistry that seamlessly translated from the screen.

Their playful banter and genuine affection for each other are evident in every interview, making them a joy to watch.

They have also forged their own careers both before and around their partnership on Trying.

Rafe is the son of British acting legend, Timothy Spall, but he is a standout actor in his own right, landing roles in films such as Hot Fuzz, Life of Pi, The World’s End. He has also been nominated for an Olivier award for his stage work.

Esther rose to prominence in 2010 for her role as Trish in romantic comedy Material Girl.

She has since starred in BBC Three sitcoms Cuckoo and Uncle, and has also trod the boards, notably she originated the role of Delphi Diggory in the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, playing the role from 2016 to 2017.

Discussing the appeal of Trying, Esther explained: "Well, he himself is adopted, right.

"So I think a lot of it comes from that experience, but I just genuinely think he's got one of those brains that understands the human condition in such a way where each character feels so fully formed."

Rafe echoed her sentiments: "He does a really good job of addressing a very weighty subject, which is infertility and people's struggles with it. And it's very real thing that lots of people have been through or been affected by, but he deals with it with a light touch.

"And he manages to weave a joke onto every page even if it isn't immediately identifiable, or like a bunch gag. He's just very clever."

As if the excitement of a potential series 5 wasn't enough, the couple also shared some HUGE personal news that has delighted fans worldwide. Esther and Rafe are expecting their first child together!

Rafe couldn't contain his joy, announcing: "Esther's having a baby, which is terrific."

Ever the comedian, he added: "Yeah, I'm feeling fine. Thank you for asking."

Esther, glowing with maternal pride, shared: "I feel so tired, like this kind of alien bubbling around at the minute so that's so lovely to hear. Yeah, I'm I'm good. I'm good. I'm just I don't know.

"This is my first so I've no idea what's coming. It's bit yeah, I was quite I hadn't terrible morning sickness for like quite a while. And then that stopped. Thank God."

Rafe added with a bemused grin: "You know, I found out this thing recently. Morning sickness is so called because men were generally around in the morning, because actually morning sickness was all day."

With the fourth series of Trying receiving rave reviews and the heartwarming news of a new addition to Esther and Rafe's family, fans are more eager than ever to see what the future holds for Nikki and Jason.

Will there be a Series 5? The cliffhanger ending certainly leaves the door wide open. Keep an eye on virginradio.co.uk for the latest news.
