With brand new series, Supacell, set to land on screens this week, its creator, Rapman, and lead actor, Tosin Cole, visited Virgin Radio to explain why you'll be rooting for the latter's character.

The six-part Netflix series arrives on Thursday 27th June and, joining the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with webuyanycar, its creator, executive producer and lead director Rapman said: “It is about five Londoners, from South East London, to be exact, that unexpectedly come into superpowers. And it's not like what you think it is. There ain't no spandex and no masks!"

The rapper, producer and director (aks Andrew Onwubolu, MBE) added: "Our lead character, played by Tosin, he actually gets the power of time-travel, finds out the woman he just proposed to, and is over the moon is, going to die three months after he has now proposed. So he has to go back to the present and find a way to stop it. And he goes everywhere and does everything he can, and he's a fish out of water, and he does whatever he can to save the woman that he loves.”

Tosin, who has previously starred in Doctor Who, Hollyoaks and EastEnders said of his character: “Michael’s a normal, day-to-day guy, a delivery driver. He’s been in a long-term relationship with Dionne [Adelayo Adedayo], and he’s just going about his day. Then, literally, the powers happen, and his world’s turned upside down, and he's trying to make it happen, you know, by hook or by crook.”

Rapman added: “Every time I was writing his character, I just felt like I was with a nice guy, someone that I could chat to, someone that I'm rooting for.”

Tosin interjected: “I think he's very relatable to the everyday average Joe.”

Speaking more about the new show, creator Rapman said: “I feel like there's something on the menu for everyone. That's how I’ve described it before. Whatever you're into, there is something in that show that you could really latch onto."

Tosin added: “You recognise every kind of character.

“All the characters are so different in their own little worlds and their own little lives that they’ve got going on, that you can see someone that you know, or you can either relate your own personal issues. I feel like they're all very different on the spectrum from each other, and that's why it makes the show so entertaining in itself.”

Speaking about how Supacell came about, Rapman told Chris: “I pitched another show. It wasn't this show, and the show that I pitched, they didn't think it was right for the network, but we stayed in contact. And then my movie came out, so I had a bit of a buzz around me at the time, and I pitched this show, and the head of Netflix was really interested. And here we are.”

The series also stars the likes of Yasmin Monet Prince, Eddie Marsan, Nadine Mills, Eric Kofi-Abrefa and Calvin Demba. On filming the show in London, Tosin said: “I strolled home, literally. I ain’t got to worry about hotels. I ain't go to worried about not going home for a while. And I kind of knew most of the main cast before, like, me and Calvin used to live together. We used to do Hollyoaks together when we were like, 18, 19, course. So he's one of my best friends from ages ago. Me and Ade did our first film together. Me and Eric did a play together.”
