It can be hard to judge how good a film is going to be just from the trailer, but if upcoming Netflix movie The Guilty is even half as thrilling as the newly-released trailer suggests, then we are in for a treat. Albeit a stressful, tense treat!

The Guilty is the new film from Antoine Fuqua, who directed Training Day and The Equalizer. It stars and is produced by Jake Gyllenhaal, and its narrative sees 911 call operator Joe Baylor (played by Gyllenhaal) receive what at first he assumes to be a prank call. It soon transpires, however, that the caller, a woman, is in serious distress and is unable to fully explain her situation, which suggests that she has been abducted. Gyllenhaal’s character gleans that the woman is with somebody dangerous who has a weapon, and so he begins to work to try and save the life of the caller.

The film is a remake of the 2018 Danish film called Den Skyldige, and all the action takes place over the course of a single morning. Its strong cast also includes Ethan Hawk, Peter Sarsgaard, and Beau Knapp, as well as Riley Keough, Paul Dano, and Byron Bowers.

If you want another indicator of the quality that we can expect from The Guilty, then the screenplay was written by Nic Pizzolatto, who created the incredible series True Detective.

The good news is that we don’t have to wait very long to see whether The Guilty lives up to expectations, as it will have a limited theatre release on September 24th, before being available to stream on Netflix from October 1st. The movie will have its world premiere at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival this weekend.

Check out the trailer here to see if you think you’ll be able to cope with this level of tension across an entire movie.

In other Jake Gyllenhaal news (and news that might make you feel old), cult movie Donnie Darko celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. The 2001 film would prove to be Gyllenhaal’s big break.

Posting on his Instagram page, he said: “It’s a film that changed my life and my career and it’s been unreal to watch this story find afterlives with new audiences and new generations.” Of the film’s narrative, he added: “Thank you to all the fans who’ve come up to me over the years with that confused look on their faces,” before saying: “Happy 20th Donnie! Let’s keep confusing people. Here’s to 20 more.”
