SPOILER ALERT: The soggy bottom is back. Everyone's favourite baking show has returned to the box and the first contestant has already left the building (read: infamous tent).

Last night, it was time to say a sad goodbye to da da da... amateur baker Tom, a 28-year-old software developer whose mini rolls, malt loaf and a non-gravity-defying cake were also a bit soft and failed to impress the judges.

Humble Tom said: "It didn’t go to plan at all. I have always been hard on myself, more than I really should be. I definitely am proud of myself and I never say that! So it must mean quite a bit.

“My showstopper was a bit of a disaster. I wanted something that would celebrate my love of classical music, so I made a three-tiered lemon and almond sponge cake of a concert hall. The judges said that for an anti-gravity cake it didn’t really defy the laws of gravity.

“I know it’s hard to go out first and it was short and sweet, but it truly was an experience that I won’t forget.

"I'm mostly going to miss spending time with all the lovely other bakers, to be honest. They're really talented and absolutely lovely people."

Judges Paul Hollywood and Dame Prue Leith were back on critical form with presenters Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding ready for more baking banter.
