The film takes a deep dive into the far right riots that took place earlier this year.

A new documentary arriving next month explores the events of January 6th when Donald Trump supporters swarmed the US Capitol building in Washington DC in a violent act of protest, resulting in five deaths. The film will feature exclusive interviews with politicians, journalists, and rioters who were there as it happened.

HBO describes the series as “an immersive chronicle of the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, when thousands of American citizens from across the country gathered in Washington D.C. to protest the results of the 2020 presidential election, many with the intent of disrupting the certification of Joe Biden’s presidency.”

HBO is producing the documentary series in conjunction with the BBC. The production team includes Finding Neverland executive producer Dan Reed, and is directed by British director Jamie Roberts, known for The Rise of the Murdoch Dynasty and War Child.

The team at HBO described the content of the documentary in a recent press release: “‌Tightly focused on the facts of the day itself, the documentary features never-before-seen footage and vivid first-hand accounts from lawmakers, staffers, police officers, protesters, and rioters who stormed the Capitol building where the electoral votes were being counted.”

“The film details how the violence quickly escalated, leaving Capitol security forces outnumbered and overwhelmed, and highlights the high-stakes standoff between police and rioters. Four Hours at the Capitol presents an unfiltered look at the insurrection, standing both as an intimate recollection as well as a stark reminder of the wider ramifications of the events of that unprecedented day, which ended with the deaths of five people and more than 140 police officers injured.”

The film arrives on HBO at 9pm on Wednesday, October 20th. UK release details have not yet been made available, but the documentary is likely to air on BBC Two around the same time.
