If you were to name your favourite Tom Hanks films, you’d have a wealth of brilliant movies from which to choose. Well, the man himself has done just that, but you likely wouldn’t be able to guess the three that he’s picked.
Tom Hanks has appeared in some incredible movies. For a start, there are the family classics like Big, The Polar Express, and the entire Toy Story Quadrilogy. Then, there are the dramas, such as Forrest Gump and Philadelphia. And let’s not forget the likes of Captain Phillips, Saving Private Ryan, and Sully.
That’s not even taking into account his romcoms, such as You’ve Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle. It’s fair to say that the Hollywood A-lister has a pretty decent CV!
However, none of the aforementioned movies make Tom’s top three, which he selected during an appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast. Whilst this might come as a surprise, and leave you scratching your head as to what the 65-year-old can possibly have selected, it should be pointed out that the actor was using his own criteria when making his choices.
Tom said: “I would not [make the selection] according to the way the movies came out. I’d do it in the way of the personal experience I had while doing them.”
The first of his selections was 2012 film Cloud Atlas. Whilst the movie only scored a distinctly average 66% on Rotten Tomatoes, Tom said “That was the first time I’d ever shot extensively in Germany and I was surrounded by history. But the work itself, we were part of this big, massive ensemble of fantastic people who were just trying to do the hardest, best work on a deep throw… that whole movie was such a deep throw that making it was magical.”
Next on Tom’s list was 1992’s A League of Their Own, which also starred Geena Davis and Madonna. He chose this film mainly because it meant he got to play baseball for an entire summer!
Lastly is a film that might appear on a few people’s lists. Cast Away was the third of Tom’s selections. He said: “We just had bold adventures when making that movie.”
The 2000 film saw Tom stranded on a desert island following a plane crash. It is also probably the only film in history that has made the audience feel sad about a volleyball!
Incidentally, as reported by The Independent, the actual volleyball used in the film, which, as we all remember, was called Wilson, recently sold for a record price of £230,000 at auction.
