It’s been 12 years since James Cameron’s massive blockbuster Avatar, and whilst we’ve still got another year to wait until we can head back to the beautiful planet of Pandora for the sequel, we’ve at least been given a sneak peak at one of the new characters.

Avatar 2 is part of four planned sequels, and will be released almost one year from now, on December 16th 2022. In it, Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) now have their own family, including Na’vi kids Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), and Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss).

As well as this trio of offspring, they also have a human child in their care. Miles Socorro, otherwise known as Spider, is played by Jack Champion. Born at the military base on Pandora, it turns out that he was too small to return to Earth; so he’s been raised in the bioluminescent jungle.

An image of Spider has been revealed by Empire. In the picture, the character can be seen coming out of the water with a mask on. Sharing the photo on Twitter, the magazine wrote: “Say hello to #Avatar2’s new human character, Spider – a child adopted by Na’vi parents Jake and Neytiri.”

Speaking to Empire, the film’s producer Jon Landau said of Spider: “Jake took him in but Neytiri always saw him as one of the people who destroyed her home and killed her father. So you have all these dynamics playing out."

The sequel will see another mining expedition coming to Pandora and threatening Jake and Neytiri's way of life. They flee with their family to another village by the ocean, and consequently much of the action takes place on or in the water.

The very complicated nature of creating the movies to be set in and out of water is one of the reasons that it has taken so long for the first sequel to arrive, as James Cameron explains here.

Avatar 2 is currently scheduled to hit UK cinemas on 16th December next year. The three remaining sequels are due to land every two years after that.
