New movie Don’t Look Up is smashing viewing records

If you haven’t seen Adam McKay’s climate change movie yet, then it seems like you’re in the minority, because Don’t Look Up is getting a serious amount of views.

The film sees Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as astronomers attempting to warn people about the end of the world, after they discover a comet that is on a direct collision course with Earth. They quickly learn though, that no one really seems to care.

It appears, however, that the viewing public really does care. The Netflix film has broken the record for gaining the most viewing hours for a movie in a single week in the streaming platform’s history.

Don’t Look Up chalked up an amazing 152.29 million hours’ worth of views around the world from December 27th to January 2nd. 

In fact, the satirical movie has been watched to such an extent that it is already Netflix’s third most watched film of all time. It currently only sits behind Sandra Bullock’s Bird Box and Dwayne Johnson’s crime movie Red Notice. And it looks set to leapfrog Bird Box in no time at all.

It seems that the film’s success has even taken its director by surprise, as Adam McKay has tweeted that he is “straight up flabbergasted” by the viewing figures.

Critics haven’t been as kind to the movie as audiences. Reviewers have scored Don’t Look Up at just 54 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, while the audience rating is a much more impressive 77 percent.
