It’s the Marvel director like you’ve never seen him before.

Taika Waititi is trading superheroes for pirates in his new comedy Our Flag Means Death, which is due to premiere on HBO Max in March.

The first teaser trailer for the series shows Flight of the Conchords star Rhys Darby as a wealthy landowner-turned-pirate Stede Bonnet.

He is on a mission to become a ‘gentleman pirate’ so takes over control of a ship called the Revenge, and hires the rag-tag crew to help him.

Stede tells his fellow pirates to ‘talk it through like a crew’ to stop the gang looking so intimidating, but it does not help matters when Waititi’s Blackbeard shows up.

The first pictures of Taika’s menacing character have also been released, and show him looking stoically out to sea with a scraggly salt-and-pepper beard and long hair.

Taika is not only starring in the show, but he also serves as executive producer, and directed the very first episode.

Alongside him on the high seas include Leslie Jones, Fred Armisen and Trainspotting star Ewen Bremner.

Showrunner David Jenkins recently told The Hollywood Reporter that no one else could possibly fit the role other than Taika.

He said: “Our Blackbeard is a legend, a lover, a fighter, a tactical genius, a poetic soul, and quite possibly insane.

“Only one man could play this role, and that is the great Taika Waititi. We're thrilled beyond measure he's decided to don the beard."

The six-episode series doesn’t yet have a UK release date, but it’s expected to land on HBO Max in March.
