13 years after the big-screen adaptation, we now have our first look at the telly version of the treasured romance novel.

Game of Thrones’ Rose Leslie and Sanditon actor Theo James star in the new Sky drama, and they have just released the first teaser trailer showing the couple desperately trying to keep their marriage together, despite time-travelling abilities getting in the way.

Rose stars as Clare Abshire, who is married to Theo’s Henry DeTamble. Henry has the ability to travel through time, but it’s not something he can control.

The teaser trailer for the six-part drama opens with Clare discussing how her husband has disappeared yet again to another time and place which is completely unknown to her.

“It’s happened again,” she says. “The bed sheets will go slack, or the shower will keep running, and you realise he’s gone. He’s just a pile of clothes.”

Henry’s powers mean he’s pulled unwillingly into a different time, and the trailer shows just how perilous that can be, with Henry landing in numerous dangerous locations.

The Time Traveler’s Wife is the best-selling 2003 novel by Audrey Niffenegger, and with its themes of love and time-travel, it has often been classified as a sci-fi romance.

Doctor Who and Sherlock showrunner Steven Moffatt adapted the story for the small screen, and previously told Deadline how he fell in love with the book and jumped at the chance to re-imagine it for TV.

He said: “I wrote a Doctor Who episode called ‘The Girl In The Fireplace’ as a direct response to [The Time Traveler’s Wife]. When, in her next novel, Audrey had a character watching that very episode, I realised she was probably on to me.

“All these years later, the chance to adapt the novel itself, is a dream come true. The brave new world of long form television is now ready for this kind of depth and complexity. It’s a story of happy ever after – but not necessarily in that order.”

The Time Traveler’s Wife will air on Sky Atlantic and NOW this May.
