Starz has released a trailer for their new upcoming political drama series, Gaslit, starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn, which you can watch below.

The series follows the true story of the unsung hero Martha Mitchell (Roberts), who is the wife of Nixon’s trusted Attorney General John Mitchell (Penn).

Martha was one of the first people to alert the public to Nixon’s antics and involvement in the Watergate scandal through a string of TV appearances and magazine interviews.

As we see in the trailer, this leads to the Nixon Administration pleading and begging with her husband to keep his wife in line, but she refuses to be silenced.

As summed up by Mo Dean (Betty Gilpin): “She’s completely insane- I love her.”

However, Martha will soon discover this comes at a cost, as one day, she is attacked and injected with a substance. Her husband and the administration convince her she must have imagined the incident, and a psychiatrist writes it off as a “paranoid episode”, prescribing her with valium.

The official synopsis reads: “The series is a modern take on Watergate that focuses on the untold stories and forgotten characters of the scandal – from Nixon’s bumbling and opportunistic subordinates to the deranged zealots aiding and abetting their crimes to the tragic whistleblowers who would eventually bring the whole rotten enterprise crashing down.”

Watch the trailer below:

Gaslit, based on the first season of the Slow Burn podcast, will also star Dan Stevens as John Dean along with Shea Whigham, Darby Camp and Aleksandar Filimonović.

The series has been created and executive produced by Robbie Pickering, who is also the man behind the Mr. Robot series starring Rami Malek that aired between 2015 and 2019.

Mr. Robot went on to win several awards, including two Primetime Emmys, and was nominated for many more- so, we’re expected good things with the latest from Pickering.

Gaslit premieres on April 24th on Starz.
