Country icon Dolly Parton will make her return to the big screen with a project very close to her heart.

Dolly’s New York Times bestselling novel, Run, Rose, Run, which she co-wrote with James Patterson, is getting a film adaptation, and the singer will not only star in the film, but produce it too.

The legendary artist will team up with Hollywood star Reese Witherspooon and her company Hello Sunshine.

In a statement to Deadline, Reese said: “Growing up in Nashville, I’ve loved Dolly since the moment I heard her magical voice and saw her luminous personality shine onstage. Beyond her magnetic presence as an artist and performer, she is one of the greatest songwriters and storytellers of our time.

“Her impact knows no bounds – as a musician, actor, writer, businesswoman, activist and all around incredible human being – Dolly Parton is not only an icon to me, but a true inspiration to women and girls everywhere.

“My admiration for her grew to even greater heights when reading Run, Rose, Run a gripping and heartbreaking book I couldn’t put down. I couldn’t feel more honoured to be working alongside her and James to bring this remarkable story to the screen.”

Dolly also shared how elated she was to work alongside Reese. She added: “I’m proud, excited and honoured to be working with my good friend Reese Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine on the movie of Run, Rose, Run from the novel I co-wrote with James Patterson. James and I love Reese and look forward to working with her and her wonderful team.”

Run, Rose, Run follows an aspiring country singer who moves to Nashville to pursue her dreams, but the dark secret at the heart of many of her songs might be the very thing that destroys everything she has.

The novel, published earlier this month, also featured a companion album which landed at the top of the US Current Country albums, American/Folk and Bluegrass charts.

It won't be the first time Dolly has starred on the big screen. She also had lead roles in Steel Magnolias, 9 to 5 and most recently appeared in Netflix 2020 musical, Christmas On The Square.
