Could it finally be time for Face/Off 2? Nicolas Cage has teased fans that a long-awaited sequel to the 1997 action thriller hit could be on the way over 20 years after the original.

Co-starring fellow Hollywood icon John Travolta, the critically-acclaimed movie saw FBI agent (Travolta) 'undergo plastic surgery in order to impersonate and get hold of his son's killer and arch-enemy' (Cage).

Cage told Comicbook.com: “That one I can talk about. Because there have been some phone calls with Neal [Moritz], who I enjoyed very much working with on the first Face/Off.

“He’s one of the true great producers in Hollywood, and they have been making some calls. The other ones like National Treasure, their priority was a TV show and godspeed to them, but maybe Face/Off. Maybe.”

He said earlier in the year: "Is it fun to think about? Sure. Would [Face/Off 2] be an exciting movie to make? Oh, hell yeah.

“But John Woo was such a huge voice in that movie. It couldn’t be a remake. I think these filmmakers even said as much — that something like that would have to be a sequel.”

One fan wrote on Twitter: "Face/Off is a masterpiece. Nic Cage capital A acting throughout the whole film, Travolta upping the creep factor exponentially. God only knows how much of the budget was helicopters and boats, but it’s all on the screen. 10/10."

A second added: "Face Off. The absolute madness of John Travolta pretending to be Nic Cage and Nic Cage pretending to be John Travolta with all the over the top action you could ask for. It's fantastic!"

A third bellowed: "HOLLYWOOD, YOU HEARD THE MAN NIC CAGE IN FACE OFF 2, NOW."

Fingers/faces crossed.
