Bridgerton heart-throb Jonathan Bailey has landed a major new movie role alongside Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs and The Theory of Everything’s Felicity Jones.

The new film titled Maria will be written and directed by former stand-up comedian Simon Amstell and, yet again, Bailey finds himself in the middle of a love triangle.

Jones will be playing the part of protagonist Maria, Bailey will play her boyfriend Eddy and Isaacs will play her father.

The official synopsis for the film reads: "Struggling to accept her age, her boyfriend's love and her father's indifference, Maria spots an opportunity to feel young, free and desirable at her father's wedding, where she meets Raffy, her new stepbrother.

“Their obvious, if inconvenient, sexual chemistry is made worse by the news that her father has been diagnosed with a terminal illness."

And we thought Anthony Bridgerton’s love triangle with Kate and Edwina Sharma’s was bad!

Filming for Maria is expected to begin both in the UK and US in autumn 2022, so hopefully it won’t clash with Bailey’s commitments to the popular Netflix period drama,  which is due to begin shooting for season three in the summer.

This comes after Bailey and his on-screen lover Simone Ashley confirmed their characters would be returning the third series of Bridgeton.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Bailey teased that, despite the fairytale ending of the last season, things are not going to be plain sailing for the pair.

He said: "There's going to be complication [ahead]. They're not simple people. I know they will work as a unit, and I know he'll be completely devoted to her, so I'm excited to see that and to explore [that]."

Filming for Bridgerton season three and Bailey’s new film Maria have not yet started, so we won’t get a release date for either just yet, but it is fair to assume we won’t be getting either until at least midway through 2023.

Season 1 and 2 of Bridgerton is currently available to watch on Netflix.
