Netflix has announced the release date for Cobra Kai’s fifth season, and you won’t have to wait too long.

The series, based on The Karate Kid, follows Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) three decades after the events of 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament.

In previous years, the new series of Cobra Kai usually lands on Netflix on New Year’s Day, however, fans are being treated with an early release for season five.

This year, Cobra Kai will be returning to the streaming platform four months earlier than originally planned on 9 September.

The teaser trailer features Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith), who can be heard telling Daniel, “You’re playing with fire, Danny boy” after John Kreese (Martin Kove) was put behind bars, with the intention of expanding the dojo across the State Valley.

Returning to represent Cobra Kai, will be Tory (Peyton List) and Kyler (Joe Seo), while Robby (Tanner Buchanan) will have to choose sides as he reconnects with his dad.

In the meantime, after resolving their issues at the end of season four, Daniel and Johnny will explore new tensions.

Speaking to TV Line about the series, co-showrunner Jon Hurwitz said: “Ever since that All Valley Tournament in high school where Daniel had the victory over Johnny, he's felt a little less than.

“He's felt like second best or below that, and then 30-some-odd years of life continued to prove that out as he found himself struggling with having odd jobs, a dysfunctional relationship with his son and no love in his life.”

Hurwitz added that fans shouldn’t expect getting any conclusion from the fifth season.

He explained: "There are quite a bit of storylines that start spinning very fast and very aggressively as we enter next season.”

Cobra Kai's fifth season will hit Netflix on 9 September.
