Samuel L Jackson is set to star in the first Garfield film since 2009.

The Pulp Fiction and Snakes on a Plane legend joins Chris Pratt, who will voice Garfield. Jackson will reportedly voice a new character called Vic, Garfield’s dad.

The film will be directed by Chicken Little's Mark Dindal, while Finding Nemo’s David Reynolds will write the script.

The film follows 2009’s straight-to-video Garfield’s Pet Force. Prior to that, there were two movies which were a combination of live-action and animation: 2004’s Garfield: The Movie, and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, which landed in cinemas two years later. In those two, Bill Murray voiced the titular character.

Not much is known about the new film, but we presume Garfield will still hate Mondays and love lasagne. There is no news yet on whether Garfield’s owner Jon Arbuckle and his pet dog Odie will also feature, or who might voice them.

Cartoonist Jim Davis, who first created the ginger cat for a comic strip all the way back in 1978, will serve as an executive producer.

Samuel L Jackson recently told I newspaper: “I don't do a lot of cinematic character studies. I tend to do popcorn movies and movies that I would have gone to see when I was a kid, movies that make me happy. Because, I think, people go to the movies to be drawn into joy and excitement of life.”

As well as starring in the upcoming Garfield film, Jackson is set to team up with one of his Pulp Fiction co-stars in a new thriller. He will reunite with Uma Thurman set to reunite for The Kill Room, which will focus on a money-laundering mission that inadvertently turns an assassin into an avant-garde sensation.
