The latest episode of Better Call Saul shocked a lot of viewers when it aired on Monday (25 May).

Warning: Spoilers ahead

In the episode, titled Plan and Execution, Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian) ends up meeting his untimely end after getting executed by Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton) in Jimmy McGill’s (Bob Odenkirk) apartment with Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn).

His death comes as Kim and Jimmy celebrate their win over Howard at the Sandpiper Crossing mediation. A defeated Howard turns up to their flat to congratulate them and then berate them for playing him.

However, he is interrupted by Salamanca wanting to talk to his lawyers. As Howard is about to leave, Salamanca calmly screws a silencer onto his pistol and shoots him in the head before turning to Kim and Jimmy to say: “Ok…let’s talk”.

Yes, it was horrifying.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about his character meeting his end, Fabian said: “I was on Howard’s side. He’s like a prophet who has seen the burning bush, but nobody believes in burning bushes. And he’s got evidence to back it up; crack the case. He knows he’s right, but it doesn’t work out.

“And by the time Lalo comes in during that final scene, I also had a sense of dread when I was reading it. As an actor, there’s still a plausible deniability in you that this is actually going to happen, and then when I read it, it was so abrupt and such a turn.”

He continued: “But it also feels like Howard is done in that office scene with Cliff (Ed Begley Jr.). He tries to explain it, but Cliff is like, ‘It’s over. Even if you’re right, it’s over.’ Jimmy and Kim have undressed him in his own office and exposed him. It’s a humiliation of untold proportions, and then the final scene is just a real gut punch.”

With only six episodes left and a whole lot of storylines to resolve before we catch up with the plot of Breaking Bad, producer Thomas Schnauz- who wrote and directed the latest episode- teased what to expect.

Speaking to TV Line, he said: “I’m very, very proud of them. We don’t spell a lot of things out for the audience, so hopefully, everything ties together in a way that is satisfying for the audience, so when we get to the end of [Season 6], the Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul of it and the Gene world will all make sense.”

Check out what Bob Odenkirk had to say about the new season when he joined the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with Sky earlier in the year.

Better Call Saul’s sixth and final season returns on 11 July on AMC in the US and on 12 July on Netflix in the UK.
