Celeste O'Connor, who recently featured in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, has signed up for Madame Web, which will also star Dakota Johnson and Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney

The Spidey spin-off is Sony’s latest Marvel adventure, and will focus on Madame Web's origin story. The titular character, played by Dakota Johnson of Fifty Shades fame, is a clairvoyant whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world itself.

As yet, it’s not known who O'Connor will play. Nor has Sydney Sweeney’s role been revealed. The latter is best known for playing Cassie Howard in the US drama Euphoria, which was about the kind of school-life that literally none of us had.

Celeste O’Connor recently appeared as Lucky in the Ghostbusters reboot, which also starred Paul Rudd and Finn Wolfhard, as well as a few wonderful cameos that we won’t spoil here!

Madame Web will be Sony's first modern comic book adaptation to feature a woman as the main protagonist. It will be directed by SJ Clarkson, who helmed Jessica Jones, and the screenplay is being written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, who wrote Morbius.

The character of Madame Web first appeared back in the 1980s in comic book form. Blind and telepathic clairvoyant Cassandra Webb turned up in The Amazing Spider-Man comic, suffering from the autoimmune disease myasthenia gravis.

She is connected to the Web of Life and Destiny, a “three-dimensional construct in five-dimensional space which acts as a model of the entire Multiverse and enables travel between realities”. If that sounds confusing, essentially it means that Cassandra can sense the past, present, and future.

Madame Web is set to land in July 2023, and filming is due to start soon on the project. Our Spidey senses detect that this is definitely one to look forward to!
