It has already become one of the hottest films of the year, and now Top Gun: Maverick has just broken another record.

The long-awaited sequel was an instant hit with fans when it premiered last month, with many arguing it was better than the original.

For Cruise, it has become the biggest box office opening of his whole career, with ComicBook reporting a take of $248 million (£196m) worldwide.

It has now been revealed that Maverick is Cruise’s biggest film domestically- and could make an incredible $500 million (£145m) domestically and $1 billion (£831m) globally (via The Hollywood Reporter).

On top of that, the sequel has managed to surpass Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness to become the highest-grossing domestic film of 2022.

While it is still early in the year, it’s hard to think what could possibly top that!

The sequel is set 36 years after the original Top Gun movie and follows Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell (Cruise), who has returned to the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program- better known as Top Gun- where he is forced to face his past as he trains up a group of new pilots, including the son of his late best friend Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw.

Joining Cruise on the star-studded cast are Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris and Jon Hamm. Miles Teller also stars as Lt. Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw, the son of Goose.

Anthony Edwards, who played Maverick’s deceased best friend in the 1986 original, shared what he thought of the new movie earlier this month.

He said: "I was lucky enough that Tom called me up. He screened it for me in person.

"So, we actually saw it at the Dolby screening room here in New York with the best sound ever, and there was just, like, eight of us watching it. It was fantastic."

He added: "People had a certain feeling in the original one, and [Top Gun: Maverick] does exactly what it felt like seeing it the first time, only more so. As I said to Tom, mission accomplished. They did it. It's a lot of work that went into that. It had the feel, it had the tone, it had what people wanted."

Top Gun: Maverick is out in cinemas now.
