Fans have had their first full look at Netflix’s upcoming fantasy drama - The Sandman.
The adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s DC Comics story is heading to the streaming platform on 5th August, and to celebrate, the new trailer dropped for the excited crowd at San Diego Comic Con on Saturday (23rd July).
As well as giving fans even more information about Tom Sturridge’s Master of Dreams protagonist, it also debuts Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie’s take on Lucifer, the ruler of Hell.
Also in the trailer is Jenna Coleman, who plays Johanna Constantine, an occult detective who gets swept up in the strange happenings.
Watch the trailer below:
“Your waking world is shaped by dreams,” says The Sandman. “Dreams and nightmares that I create and which I must control.”
“You don’t think dreams can die? Let’s find out” teases the villainous Corinthian, an escaped nightmare who wishes to taste all that the world has in store.
The official Netflix synopsis reads: “There is another world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep — a place called the Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Sturridge), gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever.
“To restore order, Dream must journey across different worlds and timelines to mend the mistakes he’s made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends and foes, and meeting new entities both cosmic and human — along the way.”
Charles Dance will star as charlatan occultist Roderick Burgess, while Star Wars icon Mark Hamill will also voice the character of Merv Pumpkinhead.
The Sandman comics ran from 1989 to 1996, and became one of the first graphic novels to land on the New York Times Best Seller list.
A film adaptation was first put forward in 1991, but never made it to screens. After shifting the focus to TV, Netflix signed off on the series in 2019.
The Sandman launches on Netflix on August 5, 2022.
