Millions of people tuned in to watch England take on Spain in the final of Euro 2024, but some of them didn’t make it as far as the final whistle.

The first-half of the big game was something of a scrappy encounter, with no goals and very few chances, and some viewers chose to switch over at half-time because the latest episode of one of their favourite dramas was about to start over on BBC Two.

Several people swapped the heartbreaking climax to the Euro 2024 final - which saw England lose 2-1 to a late goal - for the drama of The Turkish Detective.

With episode three airing at 9pm last night (14th July) - the exact time that the second-half started - viewers took to X to say they were changing channels.

When one person commented: “I don’t think it’s coming home,” another replied: “No, I think it's time for The Turkish Detective 😥.”

Another wrote: “Ah well - we've got The Turkish Detective to look forward to at 9.”

Someone else said: “8 o'clock - Spain beating England Part 1. 9 o'clock - The Turkish Detective. 10 o'clock - Spain beating England Part 2”

One commenter said: “Very much enjoyed Episode 3 of @BarbaraNadel's Turkish Detective on BBC2. Now, did anything happen in the second half of the football whilst I was away?”

Another explained: “There have been some decent matches, but the first half last night was awful, so much so, it was The Turkish Detective for me second half.”

Some viewers didn’t even bother with the first-half of the game, with one explaining: “We're watching The Turkish Detective. Much better than any ballfoot.”

The eight-part series is adapted from the award-winning and best-selling Inspector Ikmen novel series by Barbara Nadel, and stars Haluk Bilginer (Baba), Ethan Kai (Killing Eve) and Yasemin Kay Allen (The Usual Suspects).

Episode three of the BBC drama saw the murder of a rap music manager, which led to Inspector Çetin Ikmen (Bilginerand) and his team investigating intrigue and scandal in one of Istanbul’s richest families.

Mehmet Süleyman )kai) settled into Istanbul more and reconnected with his estranged father - but he continued to be frustrated in his search for Kayra Khan.

One viewer took to X to write about the show: “I think it’s one of those gems that occasionally gets overlooked.”

All eight episodes of The Turkish Detective are available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
