New York’s Empire State Building has started beefing with the London Eye.

Yes, you read that right. The two world-famous landmarks are fighting.

In what may come as a shock to many readers (but perhaps not those who consider themselves to be ‘chronically online’) many famous landmarks have social media teams who have quite a lot of fun personifying their attractions on social media.

This is exactly what was going on yesterday, when the lastminute.com London Eye posted on X the sweet message: “Happy International Day of Friendship @EmpireStateBldg, from one world class view to another ❤️.”

However, unfortunately for the poor attraction, New York’s darling skyscraper was not in a friendly mood, and later reposted the London Eye’s message with the savage response: “I would never be friends with a Ferris Wheel.”

Viewers of the post couldn’t quite believe what they were seeing. “Infrastructure beef is crazy,” penned one amused reader.

“So mean. They just wanted to be friends with us,” another follower penned, upset. However others defended the amusingly nasty post, with one person joking competitively: “This is the correct attitude during the Olympics.”

While it may come as a surprise to most people, yesterday’s International Day of Friendship incident is not the first time the Empire State Building has had problems with one of London’s leading landmarks.

Over the past few years, the skyscraper’s social media team have documented the building’s emotional will-they-won’t-they romance with Big Ben via its popular TikTok account, and the pair now have hoards of fans.

Documented via fan videos known as ‘edits’ (often scored to Taylor Swift songs or other tracks which are popular on the video sharing app), the relationship between The Elizabeth Tower and the Empire State Building has had its ups and downs over the years.

The Empire State Building’s social media also documented how it had a short lived fling with Paris’ Eiffel Tower last year, but this relationship didn’t last, meaning there’s bound to be some rivalry there during this year’s Olympics as well.
