Chilly but great news from Norway and the latest study into cold exposure and cold immersion adds to the growing body of evidence that dunking yourself in the cold is *really* good for you.

Say hello to The Arctic University of Norway and University Hospital of North Norway who’ve been looking at how cold affects our brown fat. I’ve told about this stuff for years, anyone who does the Wim Hof method knows lots about this magical stuff. You see we have two types of fat in our body, white fat (the bad) one, which stores energy and brown fat, (the good one) which burns energy and protects your major organs when it’s really cold.

If you expose yourself to cold deliberately, daily, then you build up this beneficial glucose burning fat around your liver, heart and kidneys and it has all kinds of health benefits. The hospital in The Netherlands that first examined the iceman, Wim Hof, discovered he had vastly increased brown fat levels and that the cold water or ice had boosted his norepinephrine levels by 300%. Norepinephrine is a neurotransmitter that makes your brain function better while making you feel really good! I can vouch for this, you’ll find me in the sea or in a river almost every Saturday through the winter and in the garden, in my pants, breathing and exercising every morning of every day, come rain, shine or frost and the colder it gets, the better I feel afterwards!

Encouraging news from China as biofuel boffins manage to make actual aviation fuel from used cooking oil.

Say ‘ni-hao’ to Sinopec Refinery in Eastern China who’ve amazingly managed to turn that stanky used cooking oil you’ve deep fried loads of chips or falafels in, into proper bio jet fuel.

They've tested it on airbuses and it’s not just worked like a charm but it’s just received an ‘airworthiness certificate’ and that’s not just an official acknowledgment that it works, but legal permission to sell that fuel to any airline that wants it. This stuff cuts the carbon emissions of a passenger jet by 50%, and it’s only going to get better from here.

Aviation is the last transport industry that’s almost entirely unsustainable and this is a great step in the right direction. We are going to see an era where we can fly abroad without feeling guilty or having to offset our CO2 footprint.
