Commuters on the Northern line tube have noticed someone has been placing lunch snacks and sandwiches on the platform bench and it turns out there is a sweet reason why.

A post shared on Twitter by Courtney Pochin shows a variety of sandwiches, snacks, fruit juices and cakes neatly laid out on the bench, and many have applauded the mystery person for trying to help people as food costs rise.

The caption reads: “Someone keeps leaving snacks on a bench at Kennington station at lunch time and it’s either a very kind gesture for those struggling amid #costoflivingcrisis or the tube is haunted and it’s a ghost picnic.”

It’s fair to say, people had mixed opinions about the food. On the one hand people called it “sweet” and an act of kindness.

One person commented under the post: "It’s for people struggling for money at the moment and it’s a lovely gesture."

While another simply said: “This is magnificent”.

A third added: “This is so sweet”.

However many had their suspicions about the mystery food and one person pointed out: “I would be v suspicious of unaccompanied free bench snacks ngl...”.

Another said: “This is absolutely terrifying.”

While a third wrote: “I also saw this a couple of months ago! Not sure how I feel about the direct contact between the bench and the sausage rolls...”.

In other snack-related news, did you know there is a reason why crisp packets have empty space in them and it even has an official name?

Apparently, Over-inflating crisp packets is 'widely accepted by organisation standards' and essential in order to be deemed 'functional' and is required to protect the food in the package.

You can find out why here.
