It wouldn’t be an MCU film without some major twists and turns, and Eternals is probably their most ambitious project yet.
Directed by Chloe Zhao, the film follows a group of immortal beings who, of course, have superpowers, and their mission is to protect humanity from their vicious enemies, the Deviants.
It boasts a huge cast with the likes of Gemma Chan, Kit Harrington, Richard Madden, Angeline Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani and Brian Tee Henry.
Eternals also has TWO end credit scenes that appear to set up a much-needed sequel to the film.
If you haven’t seen it yet, be warned there are spoilers ahead.
Mid-credit scene: Harry Styles is Eros
The first scene occurs about halfway through the end credits and features the Eternals, Druig (Barry Keoghan), Makkari (Lauren Ridfloff) and Thena (Angelina Jolie) on their ship The Domo.
We know they have set off to tell the other Eternals what they discovered about their mission and the Celestials, but when they lose contact with Earth, suspicions begin to rise.
It turns out their Celestial master, Arishem (David Kaye), has abducted Sersi, Sprite, Kingo and Phaistos after they interfered with his plans.
Just as the Eternals begin to turn their ship around to help, they are interrupted by a surprise guest.
Pip the Troll, pops up and begins to herald the arrival of his master Eros, who is known as the “Royal Prince of Titan”, “Starfox of mystery planet” and, most notably, “brother of Thanos”.
You may know him better as Harry Styles, however.
He tells the shocked Eternals: “Pip and I are here to help. Your friends are in big trouble. And we know where to find them.”
We knew we would be seeing the One Direction star at some point after his involvement in the MCU was leaked last year.
His arrival now suggests he will be part of the Eternals sequel, and his character, Eros, has a history with quite a few Marvel characters in the comics.
So, we can also expect to see him cropping up elsewhere.
Post-credit scene: The Ebony Blade
In the last teaser scene, we see Dane White (Kit Harrington), human boyfriend to Sersi (Gemma Chan), who we know has been abducted by Arishem.
Dane appears to be in his office, working up the courage to open a strange box with his family crest emblazoned on the front.
After telling himself “You can do this…you can do this”, Dane finally cracks it open to reveal what looks like a wrapped up sword.
However, this is no ordinary weapon.
This sword comes with its own motto, “Death is my reward” and it can have quite the effect on the mind of the owner- think the One Ring from LOTR.
As he contemplates grabbing the blade, Dane says: “Sorry- I have to try.” But, before he can get his hands on it, a mystery voice asks: “Sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?”
The screen goes black before we can see who utters the words.
Who is it?
The man behind the voice in the post-credit scene is none other than Mahershala Ali, who will be playing Blade.
Director Chloe Zhao previously confirmed the voice belonged to the vampire hunter, who will also be getting a solo movie.
Talking to Empire magazine, Zhao said: “I gotta say, in just the little time I spent with Mahershala, I can’t wait for the Blade movie to come out. It’s gonna be epic.”
In the comics, Blade and Dane form part of a superhero team called MI: 13, but it’s not clear whether Eternals will follow this path.
What it does suggest, however, is that Dane will be transforming into his alter-ego, The Black Knight.
According to the comics, Dane uses his family heirloom, the Ebony Blade, to combat magic and protect himself from death. There is one catch- the blade tends to corrupt its wielder- making them desire blood and violence.
This is clearly setting up Dane’s next move, as he intends to use the blade to rescue his girlfriend, Sersi, despite the knowledge of what it could do to him. Whether his adventure will carry on in another Eternals movie or if he will get his own is unclear.
Eternals is available on Disney Plus.
