It’s hard to name a more legendary duo than Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown, and now, Michael J. Fox has opened up about the real friendship between himself and co-star Christopher Lloyd.

The actor spoke about their relationship during a Variety Studio interview presented by Audible at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday (21st January) and revealed it took some time for the pair to become proper friends.

Michael explained: “It took me a few films to get to know him. On Back to the Future Part III, we connected in a way we hadn't on the other films. I came to see how much he loved acting. I never got that before. To sit down and talk about acting and talk about Shakespeare and King Lear… This guy can play King Lear! People don't expect that of him. He's full of surprises.”

He added: “He can tell a movie's worth of story in two seconds, and you get it. Us regular actors have to lay out hours and hours to get the information out. Chris is brilliant at it. His love of film and his love of being an actor… He's not just a crazy guy, he's an artist.”

The Back to the Future star was at the film festival to debut his documentary Still, which earned him a standing ovation.

In the documentary, Fox looks at his incredible acting career and battle with Parkinson’s disease, which he was diagnosed with in 1991.

He now does a lot to fund research into the disease through his Michael J. Fox Foundation and retired from acting for good in 2020 after returning to the industry in the early 2000s with films like the Good Fight and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Still: A Michael J Fox Movie will come to Apple TV+ later this year.
